The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, will opt to take up residence in the traditional Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, did not confirm his residency plans right away following his triumph in November.

"This decision came down to our family's safety and the need to dedicating my full attention on carrying out the platform on affordability New Yorkers supported," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its vibrant immigrant populations and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain inside me and my work," he affirmed.

Campaign Controversy

In his campaign, Mamdani connected his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the apartment despite the fact that he hails from a prominent family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side during his three terms, which ended in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for official events, and pushed for a major refurbishment of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by an environment very different than his modest Astoria apartment.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Within, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The property, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also has enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, which means the city imposes caps on how much building managers can increase rent each year.

New Yorkers view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the housing expenses rises faster than the average income.

It was reported Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
