'Serious blow' for England after Atkinson goes off suffering a hamstring problem.
Gus Atkinson added to England's injury problems upon exiting the ground during Saturday's play in the Melbourne Test in the Ashes series.
Atkinson pulled up with his left hamstring immediately following a delivery in his spell at the MCG.
The England team reported Atkinson had experienced "tightness" and required time away from the action for further assessment "over the next few hours".
The final Test of the series at the SCG starts at the end of the week.
England have been without fast bowlers one seamer to a knee injury and another paceman to a side strain during this series.
A replacement bowler was called up as injury reinforcement.
His form was underwhelming in the opening two Tests, managing only three wickets.
He was left out from the previous Test, then recalled for the Melbourne Test as Archer's replacement.
Surrey's Atkinson improved at the MCG, bagging two scalps in Australia's first innings, then making 28 while batting as one of just three England players who passed ten runs.
Following a brief spell at the end of day one, he returned on Saturday morning and dismissed the nightwatchman edging to the keeper.
Unfortunately, at the end of his spell, he delivered a variation to the batsman and suddenly grabbed his left hamstring.
Atkinson returned to the side for the Melbourne match having missed the Adelaide game.
