Prison Surprise: The Ex-President Jair Bolsonaro Confronts Time Behind Bars

He battled the law and justice triumphed.

Sixty days following being handed a 27-year sentence for attempting to “eradicate” Brazil’s political system, one-time leader Jair Bolsonaro finally looks jail-bound.

Anticipated Jailing

The adjudicated instigator – who had been living under house arrest in his mansion while a number of judicial steps and appeals proceed – is widely expected to be incarcerated in the next few days, during growing talk that he will be transferred to a well-known high-security facility.

Previous Statements on Convicts

Throughout Bolsonaro’s 40-year public life, the far-right ex- soldier displayed minimal sympathy for the country's prison population.

“For what reason must we provide those scoundrels a good life?” he once pondered. “They should just get messed, period. That's my opinion.”

On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Should you not wish to end up there, all you have to do is not sexual assault, abduction or theft.”

Prison Facility Debate

However the prospect of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has shocked allies, a group of four this week visited the complex in an obvious effort to dissuade the high court from transferring him there.

The senator, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s political party who was among that group, said he predicted the septuagenarian politician to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and worried his assigned prison could be Papuda.

Lucas claimed Bolsonaro’s severe gut ailments – the consequence of a almost deadly knife attack during the 2018 presidential presidential campaign – meant it would be risky to keep the one-time head of state there. “His health is very grave. He will not be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It would be terrible,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about overcrowded cells and the quality of prison meals.

While visiting Papuda, Lucas remembered witnessing cells containing 40 prisoners: “That’s virtually one meter squared per prisoner.

“We spoke to the inmates and they complain, naturally, of the awful cuisine,” added the senator.

Supporters Speak Out

He is not the lone figure expressing views before the former president’s expected incarceration.

Authoring in a leading daily, a different supporter, the former cabinet member Fábio Wajngarten, bemoaned the “harsh” finale to Bolsonaro’s “flawless” political career and asserted Brazil was about to experience “the largest wrong in its past”.

“It represents an injustice that eats away the hearts of countless of Brazilians,” the former minister said.

Varied Public Response

That may be true due to the significant following Bolsonaro holds on the Brazilian right. However his expected jailing has also gladdened the spirits of millions others who believe he should be jailed for planning to stop the elected leader from taking power – and also conspiring to have him assassinated.

Congressman Otoni, a representative for the incumbent leader's allied group, said: “Not a soul wants Bolsonaro to be placed in a dungeon. Nobody wants Bolsonaro to be sent in segregation. No one wishes Bolsonaro not to be fed or for him to have to rest on hard ground. We desire him to get respectful handling – but proper treatment while incarcerated. He must not carry on being his own prison warden for his lifetime.”

He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have for a long time applauding the tough conditions of convicts, had suddenly realized to their privileges. “Just now has the far-right – which has consistently asserted that human rights are not for criminals – decided to inspect a penitentiary to find out what circumstances are actually like,” he said.

“Bolsonaro is a lawbreaker,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he earned “degrading, degrading handling”.

Possible Prison Environment

Regardless of rumors that Bolsonaro could be moved to Papuda, which currently contains about thousands of detainees, his expected location looks to be a adjacent penitentiary for officers and other “special” prisoners referred to as Papudinha (Small Papuda).

Its cells are far more comfortable than those in the primary facility, although still a world away from the opulence Bolsonaro experienced while living in the stunning presidential palace, about 12 miles away.

According to information, the accommodation Bolsonaro could likely occupy in Papudinha measures about 260 square feet – about the dimensions of vehicle spaces – and includes a 12 square meter restroom with a bathing area and a 12 sq metre terrace. “Bolsonaro would be allowed to have a TV and also a small fridge in his quarters as long as they were provided by his relatives,” sources stated.

Ideological Reactions

Senator Lucas condemned the talked-about idea to send the one-time head of state to Papuda as “an act of payback” on the part of the presiding magistrate who presided over Bolsonaro’s coup trial and will determine his fate in the {
