After a pivotal victory at the Qatar Grand Prix, the Red Bull driver has significantly reduced the margin in the driver's standings. He now finds himself just twelve points behind leader McLaren's Lando Norris and in front of teammate Oscar Piastri, everything is in place for a thrilling three-way championship battle at the iconic Yas Marina Circuit.
Verstappen's most recent win was anything but predictable. Although he delivered a flawless drive for his team, the result was heavily influenced by a costly strategic decision from the McLaren team. Opting not to pit during an initial safety car period, the team effectively gifted the initiative to their rival, who seized the moment without hesitation.
"I'm excited, I'm happy to go there and have a go at it," the driver said. "I go in there with just positive energy. I will give everything I can but simultaneously, even without the title, I still know that I had an incredible season."
This perspective as he puts it takes a lot of the weight of expectation. The goal for the last race is simple: to maximize each opportunity from himself and the machine.
The incredible part of Verstappen's late-season charge so impressive is the distance he has recovered. After the Dutch Grand Prix in August, he was an enormous 104 points behind the then-leader his rival and had publicly written off his title chances.
The shift began with major performance updates introduced by his team at the Italian Grand Prix. Changes to the car's floor and aerodynamic package solved persistent performance deficits, allowing the driver to push to the limit with the car once more.
Following those upgrades, his form has been nothing short of spectacular, racking up five victories and several top-three finishes. He was quick to praise the teamwork behind this resurgence.
"We've won races where maybe we shouldn't have, by executing the correct decision as a unit," he noted. "My collaboration with my engineer, GP and the every member... we are deeply connected."
As the teams travel to Abu Dhabi, the points situation is utterly compelling.
The intensity now shifts on McLaren, who have seen a sizable lead disappear due to recent setbacks, including a twin DSQ in Las Vegas. For Verstappen, this position creates an atmosphere of liberation, turning the final race into a straight chance to go for glory with zero pressure.
