Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will be OK after being shot in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was ā€œupbeatā€ during their latest talk.

ā€œThat’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,ā€ Glenn commented. ā€œHis wife and child, they are holding up and he is expected to recover fully.ā€

The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the medical facility, where he is reported as serious yet stable.

ā€œNot certain at the moment,ā€ he added. ā€œYet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, given his positive frame of mind and his words reflect that optimism.ā€

New York police released surveillance images Monday of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and police mentioned it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims according to reports.

The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was transported to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, according to authorities. The shooter fled the scene.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking ā€œa tonā€ since the news broke. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.

ā€œWhat immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,ā€ Glenn noted. ā€œMy mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. And that’s the only thing that really went through my mind.
ā€œThere’s a process to this, which I won’t get into, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.ā€

Boyd hasn’t played during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.

He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on August 2 and was carted from the field.

Boyd has stayed involved with the squad during the entire campaign while healing from his surgery.

ā€œHe remains involved with our activities,ā€ Glenn said. ā€œI mean, he is a regular at our matches. His commitment is total. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has been instrumental in guiding others.ā€

Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
