The English squad will commence their 2028 European Championship campaign at the the home of Manchester City, on the condition that they attain the anticipated qualification for a tournament hosted across the bulk of Britain and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not welcomed an English men’s match since eight years ago, when the Turkish team were overcome 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to welcome the national team for their first match on June 10, 2028.
The team are planned to play their final two group matches at Wembley Stadium, but, should they win their group, their knockout stage opener would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Finishing second would mean beginning the playoffs at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The tournament was inaugurated at an gathering in Piccadilly Circus on the previous evening. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were barracked as they arrived the location by around fifty activists, who demanded Israel to be removed from international football because of the conflict in Gaza.
Placards were displayed with messages stating “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
The first match of Euro 2028 will be held at the Cardiff’s stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a fixture that will include Wales if they qualify.
Wembley will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be staged on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.
It is hoped that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the upcoming season, will appeal to family audiences and help engage a more diverse set of audiences.
The Irish team are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Dublin Arena and the Tartan Army would do the same at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will take part in the qualifying tournament; two reserved places will be held in reserve for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Aston Villa’s stadium and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium finalize the nine tournament locations. All will hold at least one elimination game, with the quarter-finals held at the national stadium of each host.
The qualification draw will be conducted in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a venue city last year when it became clear the proposed venue could not be renovated in time, on a date in late 2026.
“It will be a tournament for the fans and a festival of everything we value about the game – its emotion and ability to bring people together.”
Over 3 million admissions, a record for a UEFA European Championship, are projected to be made available to fans.
