Embarking on a fresh professional challenge, the former England youth boss has left her position leading the England WU23 national team to assume the role of head coach for NWSL expansion side Bay FC.
Coates succeeds Albertin Montoya, who guided the San Jose-based club during its debut two seasons in the top-flight American league. Montoya had revealed in September his intention to step down at the conclusion of the 2025 campaign, a season which saw Bay FC finish second-bottom in the league standings.
âMy time with the FA has been incredible my time with the FA,â remarked Coates. âIt has been instrumental in my development both professionally and personally. I am now prepared and eager to challenge myself in a new environment.â
In her time at the helm in 2023, Coates managed the England U23s through matches including a 1-0 victory over Norway in the European U23 League and a high-scoring loss to the United States. She will be joined to the NWSL is her former Lionesses staff member, Gemma Davies, a former Aston Villa manager in the English top division.
Bay FC's CEO, a former FA womenâs technical director, spoke highly of Coates's credentials: âShe is both an excellent coach, but she also has a proven track record of nurturing talent to compete at the highest levels.â
âCoates excels at leading of people and culture and has the football vision we were searching for,â the CEO stated.
Bay FC experienced a mixed start to its NWSL existence, securing a playoff spot and suffering a postseason defeat in its inaugural campaign before struggling to a near-bottom placement in 2025.
The Football Association's new technical lead, Gavin Step, offered thanks to the outgoing coaches: âOur gratitude goes to Emma and Gemma for their service and wish them all the best with their next chapter. They have played a crucial part in bolstering the progression route between the young Lionesses and the first team.â
âTogether, they have directly impacted the development of many promising talents who have gone on to become senior Lionesses,â Step concluded.
Since taking over Mo Marley in 2023, Coates has been integral to the advancement of a number of players to the England senior side, including midfielder Lucia Kendallâwho netted her first Lionesses goalâand attackers Michelle Agyemang and Aggie Beever-Jones.
Discussions for new U23 coaching staff is now underway, with the aim to continue the development of the Womenâs Under-23s setup in the future.
