California's Governor Acknowledges He Is Evaluating a Presidential Campaign for 2028

The California governor, a leading member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he will decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections are over.

"Absolutely, I would be lying otherwise," the governor stated when pressed about seriously considering a presidential run following the 2026 elections. "That wouldn't be honest. And I can't do that."

The governor's time in office as governor wraps up in January 2027, and he cannot run again. However, he emphasized that any determination is not imminent.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Administration Opponent

Newsom has come to the forefront as a high-profile opponent of the former president's team, employing his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand Democratic congressional seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has invited attacks from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a recent segment on a major news network. The secretary disclosed plans to cut federal funds from California and warned suspending the authority to issue commercial driver's licenses.

"I plan to withdraw a significant sum from the state," Duffy stated, following a recently reported deadly accident in California involving an undocumented semi truck driver that resulted in loss of life and casualties.

Newsom's office pointed out that the federal government had approved the worker's status multiple times, which enabled him to obtain a trucking license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was holding back additional funds from California for ignoring linguistic standards for CDL holders.

Firm Rebuttal from the Administration

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office said in a previous release addressing the secretary's comments. "For now, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: The state's truck drivers had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. The state of Texas – the single state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted poll showed that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters believed that Newsom should run for the White House in 2028. Since Trump took office, Newsom's favorability has grown to an mean of about one-third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has dropped from an average of more than 40% to 38.4%.

Earlier this year, the governor remarked while on a trip several battleground states that he had "no idea" about his plans for 2028.

He also referenced his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the young age of five.

"The notion that a individual who had modest test scores, who still struggles to read scripts, who was always in the back of the classroom – the idea that you would even throw that out is, in and of itself, remarkable," he said. "Who the hell knows? I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in the next election and who answers the call. And that's the question for the American people."
