Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.

Last October, the late-night programming block saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. However, not long after, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as sweet and soothing, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. In an era often characterized by cynicism, this show's sincerity struck a chord and turned it into a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This provides creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show follows three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their deep love for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who welcomed the series and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for a little longer."

Executive Acclaim

Accompanying the news praise from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and uniquely eerie." He specifically highlighted the fans who discovered the show and championed its uniquely offbeat appeal.

"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Wholesome Alternative

Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a wholesome alternative" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family go about their simple existence.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to help comedy break out of its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.

“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for too long, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”

What Comes Next

Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa could potentially catalyze that very evolution. If nothing else, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to enjoy the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.

The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
